Vacation, Part I

Well, we are on vacation, so there has been no post for awhile. Sorry about that!

We started off going to Philly to see Tracy and Frumper, our neighbors from Wright-Patt. Well, we tell THEM we went to see them - we really went to see their new son, Andrew. Check out this cutie.

Then, we headed to Baltimore to the National Aquarium. It was a lot of fun, if you don't count the unexpected run-in with an ex-husband. I had to laugh - I haven't seen him or heard from him in 10 years, and there we met at the top of the escalator. I had not a thing to say to him, so I just let him on first, and watched him run down the left side as fast as he could go. No loss. We took the kids to the dolphin show, which was excellent! They really enjoyed it.

Now, after this the quality of picture was not the greatest. I think I messed up a setting on the camera, so bear with me. We left the aquarium and went to Teresa's house, where we had a DELICIOUS lasagne. She was my roommate in college, and she never cooked for me then! It was yummy. And, as usual, her boys were a lot of fun. They are coming to visit us in the middle of July. How many teenage boys would hug a little girl?

Then, we made a quick run over to another friend's house from college. Gina moved to town the day before (picture a house full of boxes) and we wanted to welcome her before she left for her old job again. What is her new job, you might ask? Go ahead, ask! She is the Air Force Aide to the President. Yup, I typed that right. She has had a wonderful career so far, and this is a great move - not only did she get a great job, she is close to her family! Way to go, Gina.

Then, we got back in the car, and went to Fairfax, VA for lunch. I met someone that Chris used to work with before we got married, so that was fun. It was California Pizza Kitchen, one of my new favorite restaurants.

Back in the car for the drive to Richmond, VA. It only took us 4 hours to make a drive that should have been less than 1/2 that, but you can never count on good traffic. We spent the weekend with my roommate, Heather, from before Chris and I got married. It was great to see her and her family again. I'm taking advantage of living within driving distance before we head back out to Colorado Springs! They took us to the pool for the afternoon, so here are some pictures of that.

The highlight of the day was Mikey learning to hold his breath to dive for a penny. We were so proud!

We left Richmond, and went to Langley AFB to meet up with a friend of Chris and his wife. We hadn't seen them since Thanksgiving weekend, so it was good to catch up. He is getting out of the AF and they are moving to Houston to have a baby and live near family. They are so excited!

Then, we got back in the car and got a hotel on the beach for the night. It was called The Cape Henry Inn. There is a fantastic new playground for the kids that was so new, it isn't even on the internet. The kids LOVED the beach!!

The next morning, guess what we did after we played on the beach? Got back in the car, of course, and headed to good ol' Florence, SC. Why, you may ask? God only knows. No, my parents are living here, and they haven't seen the kids in ages. So, here we are. Tomorrow, we head to Myrtle Beach for the night, and I'll post more pictures after that part of the trip...

Travel abroad, for free!

You need to go visit England, virtually. My friend from when I lived over there, Debs, JUST started her own blog. Let's encourage her, and ask lots of questions so she has something to tell us about. At least, until she gets used to telling us anything, like WE do...ha ha ha.

Caterpillar Poop

Check out the damage. Chris and I sit on our porch or deck, and it sounds like rain. But is it? Noooo, it's not. It's poop. Caterpillar poop, raining down on us. It is ALL over the place, and feels like cat litter under your feet. I'm tired of this shit. Really, I am.

Col. Z. came to visit us. He was Chris's old boss when Chris was his executive officer, back in 2001. He became a good family friend, and still visits us often. The kids absolutely ADORE him. They gave him cuddles and hugs the entire time he was here! It was great to see him again. While he was here we went to the Firemans Parade in Centre Hall. It was a parade that consisted of fire trucks and baton twirlers. Some of the twirlers made me look tiny!! I wonder how old they were. High school? No joke, I felt pretty petite next to some of them as they marched by.

The rest of the parade consisted of candy being thrown and the kids scooping it up. This parade went in front of Michele's house (my assistant at school), so we had prime real estate! Here is a quick video of the kids:

Centre Hall Firemans' Parade

Add to My Profile More Videos

We also went on a play date and had a water balloon fight. The kids had a blast! I think it took us about 40 minutes to fill all the balloons, and about 52 seconds for them to all be splatted.

And finally, I have a bad mom admission:

I have a slightly difficult time getting our kids to eat fruits and vegetables. Molly more than Mikey. So, I googled scurvy, and showed them pictures of kids that had it. I explained if they DON'T eat fruits and vegetables, that the bowed legs will happen to them, too. So, every now and then, we have a "scurvy check". The kids stand up, straighten their legs, and I "examine" them. I am happy to report, no scurvy in the Solo household yet. I'll keep you posted, though...

Schools OUT for SUMMER!!

Yup, I'm done. I have to go clean out my room tomorrow, and then that's it. I have over 2 months off. Hooray!

I will miss the parents as much as I will miss their kids. I had such an incredible group of moms this year. They were fun, funny, and understanding.
My Tuesday/Thursday group got together and got us each a gift certificate to Talbot's. That way, it HAS to be spent on me. Good thinking, huh?

My M/W/F group got us some "different" gifts. One was a bag for the pool with a magazine, water, chips, chocolate and gum in it. How perfect!
Another got me a $30 gift certificate for a local bar. They didn't have the easiest kid, and thought I could use a drink. That made me laugh and laugh.
One mom got me a new Bible. The exact one that I had been looking at online. God works in mysterious ways. I mean, the EXACT one.
I got gift cards to Barnes and Noble (yeah for summer reading!) and Starbucks, too.

Yes, my pay is lousy. An insult, actually. But I am SO happy teaching there. We had happy parents, happy kids, and happy teachers in my room. I am glad it is the summer, but I will be just as excited to start again...

Here is a video of Mikey on his bike. The funniest part? Turn on the sound, and listen to Molly in the background.

When Mikey and Molly listened to it, Molly said "it's just me whining...."
Chris laughed at her.

I'm off to get ready to take the kids to the pool!!

True Friends

True friends are always there for you. You can be yourself, and not worry they will judge you. You can cry to them, complain about your husband and/or kids to them, or call them up to tell them the funniest thing you have heard all day.

True friends are hard to come by. And true friends sometimes move.

It's comforting to be reminded you are not forgotten.

Thanks to my book club for really brightening my day. You manage to think of me when YOU are going through so much, both personally and as a group.

I am so honored to be a part of this group of women. Even though we are scattering to the corners of the United States, we are still so much a part of each others lives. We are true friends.

Mikey's soccer movie!!

He had a great time playing soccer this season, and really enjoyed Daddy coaching him!

Here is the newest addition to the "empty backyard". I was wanting to show you all week, but we had to wait for the slide to come in!!

Yup, two swings, rock wall, wave slide, 5x5 fort, ladder, steering wheel, telescope, roof, and a "snack bar". It was supposed to be a sand box, but Chris has already build them a BETTER sand box, so he put in a floor, and a bar to eat on. The kids said it is for " Mommy and Daddy to bring a cooler and have a beer!" They are so funny. They know us so well!

Our week at the Solo's...

Today Mikey learned how to ride a bike with no training wheels. I was so proud. And so sad. Chris was great - running behind him, his arms outstretched in case his son wobbled. I sat on the porch, watching with tears in my eyes. He's getting to be such a big boy.

I had my annual exam to refill my Pill prescription yesterday. You know how they ask you a million questions before the Pap smear? So, I'm answering these questions as fast as they fire them at me. Finally they get to "Are you sexually active?" I want to say "Why else would I be here - I need to get my refill!" Instead, I keep a straight face, and say "Yeah....unless I'm exhausted...then I just lie there..." She looked at me, not quite knowing WHAT to say until I winked at her. Then she cracked up and said "I think we all do that sometimes!" I wonder how long it took her to tell the others out in the office what I had said. Hey, at least I made her laugh!

Molly got a gift card from Uncle Mark for her birthday. She called him to tell him thanks, and her conversation went like this:
"Hi Uncle Mark. Thanks for the gift card. How much money is on it??"
I laughed and took the phone away from her. Mark said "She is a true Jennings". Hey, at least she takes after ME! ha ha
ONE MORE WEEK OF SCHOOL!!

Memorial Day weekend!

I hope everyone had a great long weekend. I only have two more weeks of school, and then my summer can officially begin. So much to show you -

We joined a pool for the summer, so here are some pictures of that!

Molly was "watering" the sidewalk. I wonder what she hopes will grow...?

Mikey and me playing in the pool. He was pretending to wash his hair with a vegetable scrubber, and I was the shower. He is so silly!

The picture of our empty backyard. Now, we need to do something about it!

Chris gets to work!

More construction to come!

Chris and Mikey went to Memorial Day services. Molly had a HORRIBLE tantrum, so I stayed home with her - I was not letting her go ANYWHERE like that today!!

And lastly, we had some friends over for a cookout. What is Memorial Day without a cookout??

They are from Korea and Turkey, and I am having fun teaching them some slang. I wonder what to teach then next. Hmmm... hee hee

Here is a great contest that I found through Wendy.

5 Minutes for Mom has one for tutus for the girls we all have.

I'm going to post this now to see if my links work. Poor Wendy has to teach me all of this over the phone two time zones away!

I'll do a real post this weekend, promise.

Working hard!

There has been so much going on, and the weather is finally pretty, so I haven't been blogging much recently. Sorry! Chris built the kids a sand box, 6x8. He and Mikey painted it, and it was filled in that Sat. morning. What a fun project for them to do together! It has a lovely cover that fastens down, and the kids love it.

Chris sent me flowers at school. I thought it was for nothing, but that was too good to be true. LOL Pretty, aren't they??

I had this same giraffe when I was 2. Actually, I had two of them, because I parked it in the driveway like it was my car, and my mom backed over it. So, my mom bought me one several years ago. Here is Molly on it. What do you think, Mom?

This is Kapri's book, as a finished product.

This is the first page, and it says "Kapri is happy."

Kapri is sad.

Kapri is angry.

Kapri is sleepy. So, the books were short, but labor intensive for 3-4 year olds!!

My mom bought me a Cricut last week. For nothing. What a fantastic day to get a box in the mail for ME, and have it actually be for ME!! And, it was a surprise!! Yeah for Mommy. She knows me.

I leave you with this parting shot. Dollar pitcher night at The Gaff. It was fun.

Life got BUSY!

Sorry for the lag between posts, it took a comment from Wendy to get me going before I head to bed.

Here is a picture of us on the HUB lawn, having a picnic on Tuesday. It was nice to see Chris again!

We had a field trip at school to a "retirement home". I told the kids we were going to sing to some grandmas and grandpas, and told the parents we were going to sing to "old people". Not PC, but true, right? The other bus had a stow-away on board as we headed back to school. Some lady decided she was going on a bus trip, and just sat there, waiting to go somewhere. Anywhere. The staff had to get some retirement home staff to come get her off the bus. Sweet old lady. Just wanted to go somewhere.

Then, we had Young Author and Artist night at school. A huge success, but a butt-load of work to get ready for. Our class made some adorable books. Let me describe them:
I took 4 pictures of the kids faces - one happy, one sad, one angry, and one sleepy. I printed them out on the computer and cut them out to be about 6x4.
The kids cut out 4 circles for heads, and I glued each picture on a head. Under it we printed out the words on the computer and glued them down.
We traced the kids hands and cut them out. We painted the kids feet, printed them, and cut them out. I made a "neck" that no one could see for the back out of poster board, and then took an 11x18 piece of construction paper. I cut a triangle out of the short end so it had "legs". The kids took some ribbon, glued it down for a belt, and decorated the "shirt" with foam shapes, sequins, buttons, anything we could find to glue.
I added arms of construction paper, glued the hands on, the feet on, the neck on the back, the head on, and added the cover called "The Many Moods of _____"
Each page said "_________ is happy." " ______ is sad." You get the picture?
I'll try to take a picture of one tomorrow at school before I send them home and post them. They were the absolute cutest things, but took an insane amount of work. Thank God for my assistant, Michele. She keeps me sane, on track, and organized. I really couldn't do it without her.

Then, we also had to crank out Mother's Day stuff. You know, card, poem, gift. By the time it was this weekend, I was B-E-A-T.

Mikey and Molly go to school 5 days a week, so their classes had "Mother's Day Teas". They sang songs, we had refreshments, and I just loved them in general.

Funny things from Mikey today:

Chris : Who has gas??
Mikey: Who else? Mowwy Hewaire....

After the bath, wanting pajamas on:
Mikey: Who are going to do first? Soccer boy, or the little girl who cries?
Of course the answer had to be "Soccer boy, who scored two goals today!!"

Here is a picture of the little girl who cries and always has gas during her Mother's Day Tea.

I sure do love her!

The kids and I found the Jelly Belly Bus at the grocery store, and got free samples of "recipes".
The cinnamon apple pie ROCKED!!

My Second Interview

1. You have 2 children very close in age, did you plan on having them so close? Do you like them so close in age or do you think it would be easier to have them farther apart?

They were planned to be that close together! I had Mikey when I was 33, and didn't have time to spare, really. My friend, Wendy, had hers 15 months apart and convinced me I could do it, too! Well, mine are 12 months apart (almost 13) and I was MUCH older than good ol' Wendy....it was tough!

I had gestational diabetes with Mikey, and he was a month early, spending a week in the NICU. He had acid reflux, colic, and was lactose intolerant. NOT an easy baby. It was difficult, to put it lightly. No family around to help out...I decided if I was ever going to do this again, it was going to be right now.

In the beginning, it would have been easier to have them farther apart. I don't really remember much of Molly's first two years, and that's a shame, but, now I am so thankful and praise the Lord that he gave them to me when he did. They are extremely close, protective, and best friends. Don't get me wrong - sometimes they physically attack each other - but they will not let anyone else attack the other one, in any way, shape, or form. They really do LOVE each other. Long may it last.

2. Name a moment that stands out in your mind that defines who you are today.

Who am I today? That is a tough question to answer every single day, much less in general! Who am I?

I am a walrus...(If you didn't grow up watching The Breakfast Club, you won't get that one...)

I suppose I had an epiphany in college. I woke up, and in one morning I changed my major to Elementary Education from Communications (about 1/2 my credits didn't transfer over) and I went to the the Detachment and dropped out of ROTC after 2 years of being one heck of a good cadet. I decided I wanted to teach small children, that I was created to do that, and nothing would stand in my way. Everyone was shocked, to say the least, but I never looked back.

It meant that I had to go to school year-round, and go an extra semester, but I was so happy! I had finally found my calling.

3. What is your favorite childhood memory?

I wasn't really a child anymore, but I remember working in the office my senior year of high school during my study hall. I ran errands and things for the secretary. I loved her. Anyway. I was a big fish in a small sea there. It was a small school, I was in a million activities, and never got in trouble. I took advantage of that and told the secretary sometimes that I had "errands" to run, and she'd just smile and look away. I'd run get my best friend, Amy Jo, out of study hall, and we'd drive all the way to Roanoke to go to McDonalds to watch the boys from the other high school as they drove around. We thought we were all that and a bag of chips.
Or maybe it was winning the 1600 at Regionals my sophomore year. I loved running in 8 different state meets, between track and cross-country. That was my life.

4. If you could have any superpower what would you want and why?

I want to be able to wriggle my nose like Samantha in Bewitched. She could have the house clean, or dinner cooked, or be somewhere, or change her clothes, etc. all by wriggling her nose. It's like buying time. And a maid. And a cook. All rolled into one.

5. If you could change anything about yourself what would it be and why? Cannot be anything physical..

There is so much to change. I'd be more patient. With everyone. I'd read my Bible more. Every day. I'd tell people more often how much they mean to me. I'd exercise more. Or make sure I had the time to do it.

I'd spend less and save more.

The list could go on and on. But at the end of the day, after we've said our prayers, we should be pretty happy with ourselves. Because this is how God made us. Wonderfully.

And for a picture, here is Molly reading. She IS wonderful, isn't she?

Questions from Wendy...

1) If you could choose what each of your children will be when they grow up, what will they each become, and why?
Boy, this is a hard one. Their personalities are still developing so much! Mikey is very sensitive, but analytical. He'd be a good judge, I think. He reasons everything through, but has such compassion and empathy. He wears his heart on his sleeve, so he'll have to toughen up. Molly. Hmmm..Molly is very talkative and animated. Perhaps a news reporter, but not of anything important. For People magazine, or something. The sad news would get her down too much, but talking to people? She's wonderful! Hey, I can even get her to sing "Hail to the Lion" on demand for an audience!

2) Where do you see yourself in 40 years?
Wendy, do you realize how OLD I am?? Goodness, in 40 years I'll be 77 years old! I'd like to think I see myself old, with Chris, enjoying our grandchildren. Reading a lot of books. Talking to a lot of people on the phone. I would like to think I would have made a difference in someone's life by then. You never know what kind of influence you have on people, or if you have one at all. Most people never tell you.
And, hey, if I've kicked the bucket by then, I'll be in Heaven, happier than I ever thought possible.

3) What is the most embarrassing thing you have ever done?
Oh, I do so many embarrassing things! Most embarrassing. That's a tough one.
Once in college I climbed a tree and got stuck, and my friends had to rescue me.
Once when I was pregnant I had a yeast infection, and got one of those oval pills you insert to fix it. Wow, I thought, that was easy - I didn't even feel it! Well, in the middle of the night, I heard the cat playing with a toy in the bedroom. I got up, investigated, and yup, there was my oval pill. It must have dropped on the bathroom carpet (no WONDER I didn't even feel it!), and the cat found it. I woke up Chris I was laughing so hard. Embarrassing to tell him about it, too. LOL
Once I asked a mom at school when she was due, as her daughter told me she was having a brother. The mom wasn't pregnant, just heavy. Oops.
Once Chris took me out to eat at The Coronado Hotel in San Diego with a guy he worked with from Boeing. Mike - now he was HOT. Mike bought his wife, Trudy, and I a bottle of wine. Trudy drank one glass. I finished the bottle. I then proceeded to walk into a glass wall. Chris drove us back to the hotel. When the valet parking dude opened my door, I fell out onto the sidewalk. At least I didn't puke.
I could go on and on, but I'll stop there to save myself from total humiliation.

4.) If you could be anyone for one day, who would it be and why?
My first thought was Oprah - she meets so many people, and can do so much to change situations with her money.
My final thought is my mom. I want to know if she realizes how much she is loved and adored, and if not, then I could start fixing it the next day. But I think she knows.

5.) If you could meet any of your blog authors, who would it be and why?
I've been holding out on you guys. I have secret blog I read all of the time. FPMama.
If I could go to school all over again, I think I would like to be an OB/GYN. I know, I know, teaching is my God-given talent, and I think I would miss it, but that world just fascinates me. I go to visit Wendy, and end up reading Bart's medical study journals and giving Wendy the synopsis. Birth is just incredible.

So, that's that for now. It's almost 11:30, and I have school in the morning. Goodnight!

For those of you who are VT fans, check out this link. You have to go through several pictures from the Blue/White game, but look for the guys with painted chests, and then their backs. Most impressive!

The Blue/White Game
This weekend was our annual Blue/White game, and we had beautiful weather for it! The estimated attendance was 72,000, which is incredible when you stop to think it is just a spring practice that we go to see.

My college roommate, Teresa, and her boys came up for the weekend and we had so much fun! Her boys were so patient and kind to my kids, and tolerated their antics the whole time. I hope my kids grow up to be that nice.

Here are some pictures, with quick descriptions:

This is our student section, honoring Virginia Tech. We all wore maroon and orange to the game instead of blue and white. A first. Hopefully, the last. I hope nothing like this tragedy ever happens again.

Kyle, Teresa's oldest son, carried Molly to the game from the tailgate. Behind them, is Emma M., from my class. Isn't she a cutie, too?

Here is one shot of our tailgate. We ended up having 9 families come, and even managed to get PRIME REAL ESTATE. There was no space left, so we just took it. Yes, it is where we usually tailgate with Mark's parents, and since no one else was there, we pulled right in! The kids had so much room to play, it was incredible. Good friends, good weather, good play space. It was almost a shame to leave it to go into the game!

We went and found Mark's parents during half-time, also known as Grandma and Pop-Pop Keller. They hadn't seen Teresa and her boys in years! The kids were so excited to see them again, as it has been since football season. We love the Kellers.

Ryley let the kids sit on him while he played his computer game. They were enthralled!

Saying good-bye in the parking lot! Came back soon!

I will post a new blog tomorrow - I have Bunko here tonight and have to get ready for it. I have LOTS of pictures to show you!!

The AFROTC Military Ball

Last night Chris and I went to the Det. 720's Military Ball, and had a lot of fun! One of the cadets invited us to meet his parents, so while Chris was talking to them, I was standing next to an older couple. A lot of the cadets had brought parents and grandparents, so I asked them if they had a child in ROTC, and he said no, he works for the university, but do I have a child? I didn't quite know how to reply! His wife looked shocked, and I simply said I do have children, but they are 3 and 4. His wife looked at him and said "You aren't off to a good start, honey. Would you like to try again?" I just laughed. It turns out, he is the assistant vice-president of the Dept. of Undergraduate Studies. So, I asked his wife what table they were sitting at, and she said "Um...I think the head table." Then, I just laughed at my own stupidity. I told her to wave to us down at Table 5!

They were such a sweet couple, and I really enjoyed talking to them. It turns out he is retiring this spring after working here 36 years. All I could think of was "Wow. He has been doing this since I was 1. Almost my whole life."

I also went out dress shopping. I found one on sale for half-price that I loved, so I got it. After a fiasco getting it hemmed in less than a day (a friend of mine from school is a prefessional seamstress, so she did it in an hour the afternoon of the dance!) I had my hair done, my nails done, and I was ready.

Getting dressed up with Chris is so much fun! Hooray for babysitters.

2. In Europe with Chris

3. Skiing out in CO

4. At the beach with the whole family

I'm tagging Laura, and Amy. Unless you've already done it. Then, I'll do what I do with emails that say "Forward this!", and just forget about it. I'm fine, no one I know has died because I didn't forward the email, and we haven't declared bankruptcy because I didn't forward the email.
We'll declare bankruptcy because of my trips to Gymboree! LOL

Our pretty day today!

The weather was SO pretty today, the kids and I decided to play after school. We came home, changed clothes, and Mikey packed us some snacks. We were off! ( I apologize now for the poor quality pictures - I had to use the old camera, since mine wasn't charged!)

First stop: Old Main

The kids are in front of Old Main, which is across the street from my college apartment. It reallly made me miss the days of living there...

I used to take a quilt and pillow just behind where the kids are standing and take lovely afternoon naps. Ah, those were the days...

Next stop: INSIDE Old Main

which was one of the original buildings on campus. Maybe THE original?? Can't remember...

Mikey and Molly even listened to the audio tour. How cute are they?!?

Then, we had to stop to look at a big pile of ants eating something by the base of the step!

Next stop: The Nittany Lion Shrine

After the Lion, I dragged the kids over to Chambers building, where most of my classes were, and we found my old advisor! Kep Sones is the best advisor in the world, and still going at it... We'll meet up for lunch together this summer when things calm down on campus and I'm out of school. That stop didn't get a picture - it would have been too cheesy.

Next stop: The Nittany Lion Inn

The kids were about done hanging out on campus, so the promised land that I bribed them with followed...

Final stop: Holmes-Foster Park

What an adventurous day!
